Mystery and Surprise
My wayward quest for a little mystery and surprise to shake things up; one woman can change the world; a round up of the books, food, and beverages that I enjoyed in June
I have been swept up in the fantasy romance novel genre and have spent much of the past few months engrossed in the pages of battles, dragons, fairies and slow-burn romance. After reflecting upon a rather mundane domesticated day, I told Todd “I want more mystery and surprise in our lives!” I had visions of dates without kids at fancy restaurants or a weekend away in the mountains.
Later that afternoon, I was studiously tidying the mudroom, when Todd jumped out from around the corner and yelled, scaring the bejeezus out of me.
I screamed.
“That is not what I meant when I said I wanted more surprise!”
I stood outside the hospital during a quiet weekend shift, waiting for my mom and son to visit me on my lunch break. I was happily breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the people-watching when I suddenly felt something crash into my head.
I had a bird stuck in my hair. It’s tiny talons digging into my scalp. It’s wings beating against my head. I frantically waved my arms and shook my head desperately attempting to free my hair from its clutches.
The irony is that I have been teasing my youngest child for years that if she doesn’t take care of her hair, she’ll have woodland creatures living in it. This has never happened to her, regardless that she looks like Mowgli from The Jungle Book most days. I, who look mostly polished and put together, have had a bird stuck in my hair. This particular surprise felt like a lesson straight from Karma, herself.
Then there was the mystery of why the dog was neurotically scratching. I assumed it had to do with anxiety or childhood trauma, which is what I blame everything on. A trip to the vet debunked this assumption and confirmed that she had LICE.
LICE!!!!
Thankfully it was just dog lice and the vet reassured us that it does not transfer to humans. I do not have to neurotically methodically wash everything or set the house on fire to rehome her. Between the medication and Todd consistently vacuuming her fur, it cleared up within a few days. Thank goodness.
The month was not all angry birds and animal disasters. There was the mystery of the art supplies that were left for me on my desk at work. With a little sleuthing, I discovered that my dear co-worker, Susan, had gifted them to me. There was also the surprising joy of watching my son catch an impossible pass in his Flag Football playoff game. He jumped out of nowhere to catch the ball and landed with an impressive tuck and roll. I am still bragging about it to anyone who will listen. My dear friend Kristine invited me to go to Theatre Calgary to see “Beaches the Musical” and our friendship picture ended up on the big screen during intermission. The June sky with her storms and sunsets seemed to be exceptionally beautiful. Despite my initial chagrin at the mundanity of life, it appeared that there was no shortage of surprise, mystery and delight if I paid attention to it.
